- 1). Connect the hard drive from the dead Mac to the PC. Use an external SATA-to-USB adapter to make the connection by connecting the SATA connector to the hard drive from the Mac, then inserting the USB plug into an available USB port on the PC.
- 2). Download, install and run HFSExplorer (see Resources). As of the time of publication, HFSExplorer is the only free software available to perform this task.
- 3). Press "Ctrl" and "L" simultaneously to load the Mac drive.
- 4). Click the "Autodetect" button. This scans all drives connected to the PC to find the Mac-formatted drive.
- 5). Click "Load."
- 6). Click to select the files to be copied from the Mac hard drive.
- 7). Click "Extract" to copy the files to the PC.
