- 1). Connect the external hard drive to your computer and power it on. A prompt appears stating the computer has detected a new removable piece of hardware.
- 2). Insert the Windows home server installation CD into the computer. In a moment, the installation wizard appears. Select "New Installation" and click "Next."
- 3). Read through and accept the license agreement and click "Next."
- 4). Type in the product key. You can find this key either on a cardboard card that came in the product packaging, on the user manual or on the installation CD itself. Click "Next" once completed. In a moment, all of the available drivers on your computer, including the external hard drive, appear.
- 5). Select the external hard drive as the server drive and click "Next." Note that all information on the driver is written over, so, if you want to back anything up, do so now.
- 6). Click "Yes" to the warning screen, then "Start" and the installation begins. Windows will run a series of different setup steps while you sit and watch. The entire process can take several minutes to complete.
