- 1). Look at your computer's hardware and find what you want. Consider your video card, hard drives, optical drives and amount of RAM and determine what you want to upgrade.
- 2). Read your manual to find out what your computer can be upgraded to. Research and buy compatible hardware to use for upgrades.
- 3). Open your computer's case to install any internal upgrades. The computer case will often have an access door that is screwed into the back of the case. Unscrew the case door and slide it out. Some cases may have buttons or other pieces that need to be moved to open the case.
- 4). Make sure the computer is off and unplugged. Unscrew any hardware that you are upgrading and pull out any cables. Remove the hardware and put the new hardware in its place. Connect the new hardware the same as how the old was connected and reattach any cable including power cables. Screw the new hardware in place and close the case.
- 5). Restart the computer. The operating system will find the new hardware and ask for drivers if necessary. Insert the driver CD and select the driver files from the CD that match your hardware and operating system. The computer will finish installing the upgrades.
