- 1). Prepare the wall for the art by coating it with a latex primer in an eggshell finish. Wash the walls, fill any holes, and smooth rough spots with fine sandpaper. Make the entire surface even, and then paint on the primer. Let it dry for two days before continuing.
- 2). Paint the background color on the wall for the painting. Choose a color that will go with the rest of the colors you are working with. For example, if the mural is black and white, you can paint the background white and then add the black paint to create the design.
- 3). Add the rest of the paint over the background. Follow your instincts and continue to work on the painting until it feels done. Abstract art doesn't have any limitations and you can continue adding paint as long as you like. Acrylic paint dries faster than oil paint but you can move either paint around on the surface as long as it is wet.
- 4). Seal the painting after it is dry with a water-based varnish. This will protect it and also let you wash the surface when needed -- this is particularly important in high traffic areas or or if you have small children.
