Teenagers are often picky about their opinions and what they want. Their tastes also frequently do not match up to their parents, so issues like decorating a teen's room should be a joint venture where the teen has a say in the proceedings and does his fair share of the work. One of the first things to choose in teen room decoration is the color scheme. Various ideas for paint color will work for this purpose. - By painting the walls of the teen's room a dark color and painting the furniture a lighter color, you can create a contrast between the two that makes the object in the room pop out more. A deep blue on the walls creates an effective contrast with white furniture that makes the room more aesthetically pleasing than keeping everything the same color. Likewise, paint the walls to contrast comforters and other objects in the room such as posters. White walls contrast well against a black comforter or black upholstered furniture.
- If your teenager is a fan of a particular college or sports team, paint the room in that particular color scheme. If your teen thinks he wants to go to the University of Michigan, paint the room in a combination of blue and gold. Likewise, if he is a die-hard fan of the Chicago Bulls, red and black may be the way to go. These color schemes are already designed to go well together, which is why the college or sports team uses them for their uniforms and marketing. Using the college colors is also a way to get a teen to plan for college if that is what he wants to do.
- Any color can get boring if it is used on all the walls as the sole color source. Trim helps provide variety and contrast to the walls. If a girl's room is painted in a pinkish color, paint the trim in either a darker shade of the same color or in an alternate color that complements it, such as white or light blue. Since colors can affect mood, use color combinations that your teen will find uplifting and not depressing. Light blue is often cited as a relaxing color according to Bloomsberg University of Pennsylvania. Using it as a trim to another color helps to create a relaxing atmosphere for your teen.
