- 1). Insert the SD card into the SD card slot on your computer, if it has one. Most newer computers come with a built-in SD card reader.
- 2). If your computer does not have an SD card reader, purchase a USB card reader. As of 2010, SD card readers run anywhere from $10 to $50 and more, and are available at most electronic stores.
Connect your USB card reader to the computer using the USB cable that came with the device, and insert the SD card into the SD card slot on the USB card reader. - 3). Click the Windows "Start" button and click "Computer" to launch Windows Explorer. You should see your SD card listed as a portable hard disk. If you are using a Mac, you should see your SD card listed as a portable hard disk on the desktop.
- 4). Double-click your SD card's portable hard disk to launch the hard disk window. Locate the files you want to transfer from your computer to your SD card, right-click them and click "Copy." Right-click the SD card hard disk window and click "Paste" to copy the files to your SD card.
Alternatively, you can copy files to your SD card by dragging them from your computer to the SD card hard disk window. - 5). Close the SD card window when you finish copying files to your storage device. Click the "Safely remove hardware" icon on the system tray next to the clock, click your SD card in the hardware window that launches, and click "Stop." When prompted, disconnect your SD card from the computer. If you are using a Mac, right-click your SD card on the desktop and click "Eject." Disconnect your SD card from your computer.
