How to Make Your Basement Into a Chill Room

    • 1). Use a movie, a sports team or a video game to create the chill theme for your room; this helps you select the colors and furniture styles for the room. Possible examples include an Austin Powers '60s theme, the Lakers or a video game theme such as World of Warcraft or Mario Brothers.

    • 2). Paint the walls using your theme as a guide. If you don't have a daylight basement, paint the walls a brighter color such as yellow, cream or light blue to add brightness to the room. Paint an accent wall to create a focal point by painting one wall a different color than the walls around it. For example, paint your accent wall light green and the walls adjoining and opposite it yellow.

    • 3). Cover the walls with large tapestries if you have cinder block walls. These will not only cover the aesthetic flaws associated with these types of walls, they will keep the space warmer.

    • 4). Decorate the room with items that support your theme. Frame team jerseys in shadowboxes, hang old 33 rpm records on the wall, put lava lamps on the bar area, throw a couple of bean bag chairs in the corner for extra seating or display an action figure collection in a glass display case.

    • 5). Lay down area rugs if the floor doesn't have wall-to-wall carpeting. Look for rugs or carpeting that work in indoor/outdoor settings. These last longer than regular indoor carpeting.

    • 6). Position an entertainment center against the focal wall. The armoire style works well, particularly if it matches the decor in the room and provides shelf and drawer space for video games and movies. Set up the TV, game consoles and stereo in this area.

    • 7). Include adequate lighting for the space. Augment the overhead lighting with plenty of floor lamps in the corners and lamps on the end tables by the couch. Provide a separate switch with a dimmer for each light.

    • 8). Set up a snack area with a small fridge and microwave on a bookshelf, and fill the fridge and shelves with snacks like sodas, popcorn and fruit.

    • 9). Put together a game area for games such as pool, foosball and darts. Set it apart from a sitting area to cut down on the noise. Hang a light above the pool table.

Buy plenty of throw pillows and blankets for the couch so that people can get comfortable while they watch movies. Use designs that match the decorating theme you've chosen for the room.
