- 1). Locate the main drain clean-out to gain access to the drain tile. The clean-out is usually close to the place where the drain stack exits the home. There is a nut in the center of the cap on the clean-out.
- 2). Place a bucket directly under the clean-out, and lay old towels around it to catch any residual water in the pipe.
- 3). Turn the nut at the center of the clean-out cap counterclockwise with a pipe wrench. The cap will turn with the nut. Remove the cap completely once it is loose enough.
- 4). Install a root cutter on the end of the power snake coil. Follow the directions for the power snake that you have rented. Various cutters are provided with a power snake. If you are not sure which one is for cutting roots, ask the rental agent.
- 5). Insert the end of the snake's coil into the drain tile, and turn on the snake. Guide the coil deeper into the tile by using the coil release. When you encounter resistance, allow the coil to run as you move the coil in and out gently. This will give the tool a chance to cut through the roots blocking the drain. Fully extend the coil into the drain to ensure that you have cleared the entire length.
- 6). Replace the clean-out cap. Fill a sink on the lowest level of the home with water, and release it. Repeat this procedure several times to flush the drain tile and move root debris into the sewer system.
