- 1). Move as much out of the room as possible, including furniture, artwork and anything else the paint might hit. Drape plastic tarps over the floors, covering the flooring. Use additional tarps on any larger pieces of furniture you leave in the room.
- 2). Stand on the ladder and cover the edges of the support beams with strips of painter's tape. Apply a coat of primer to the ceiling, using a paint tray and paint roller for a smooth coat of the primer. Wait several hours for the primer to dry or up to 24 hours, depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations. Clean the paint roller and paint tray with fresh water.
- 3). Pour the chocolate brown paint into the paint tray. Paint one coat of the brown paint on the ceiling and wait until it dries. The darker brown shade warms the room and makes the ceiling feel lower. Apply a second coat of brown paint if needed.
- 4). Peel the masking tape away from the support beams once the brown paint finishes drying. Rub your hand across the ceiling, making sure that the paint is dry and that it feels thick and not tacky. Apply painter's tape to the ceiling between the beams.
- 5). Paint the support beams with the light cream-colored paint and a paintbrush. Once the cream paint dries, apply a second coat and let that coat dry before removing the painter's tape. The cream breaks up the brown and keeps it from feeling too heavy in the room.
