- 1). Wet the concrete floor with a fine spray of water just until the surface darkens. Turn fans on and direct them at the floor to speed the drying process. Watch the floor as it dries to locate areas that dry first; these indicate the presence of pipes in the concrete. Mark all of these locations with chalk and don't insert nails into them.
- 2). Walk to one end of a wall and measure out approximately 3/8 inch from the wall, using a ruler or tape measure. Place a tack strip containing masonry nails onto the floor with the tips of the nails facing down. Position it 3/8 inch away from the wall.
- 3). Hold the tack strip steady with one hand and hit the head of each masonry nail firmly with a hammer to drive it into the floor.
- 4). Continue installing additional tack strips end-to-end in the same manner until you reach the end of the wall.
- 5). Measure the distance between the end of the last installed tack strip and the wall. Mark the same distance on a new tack strip, using the pencil.
- 6). Put on work gloves so you don't injure yourself on the tacks and cut the strip along the pencil line using a hacksaw or shears.
