- 1). Look for the leak from the inside. Go into the attic, and look for water dripping from the roof. It helps to look while it is raining. If it is not raining, have a friend use a hose to water down the roof while you observe from the attic.
- 2). Place newspapers on the floor to help locate the leak. Spread the newspapers out over a wide area, and observe the surface of the papers for wet spots. This helps you pinpoint the exact spot of the leak above.
- 3). Climb onto the roof, and find the approximate area that is leaking onto the newspapers below. You might find that shingles are actually missing from the roof in that particular spot. Keep an eye out for any damaged shingles. Crooked shingles, missing corners or large tears are obvious signs of damaged shingles.
- 4). Examine the vertical gaps between the shingles. These are usually the first area of the shingles to break down from the elements. Look at the top portion of the vertical lines, and check them for cracks.
- 5). Look for shingles that have missing granules. The granules are portions of crushed rock applied to the surface of the shingles to help repel water. If you see portions of shingles that have a smooth finish rather than a rough, jagged surface, then the granules are missing and the shingle is probably damaged.
