- 1). Locate the position of the sewer vent. The vent pipe extends up through the attic to the roof. Use a carpenter’s string with a weight on the end to locate the position on the bottom of the roof directly above the pipe. Hold the string against the bottom of the roof where the weight is directly above the pipe. Drive a nail through the roof sheathing and shingles from the inside to mark the location of the vent.
- 2). Cut the shingles away from the point where the nail extends through the roof. Remove enough shingles to expose a segment of the roof sheathing the size of the vent pipe. Use a sharp utility knife to cut through the shingles.
- 3). Cut the roof sheathing to create a hole large enough to accommodate the pipe using a reciprocating saw. Extend the pipe through the hole to a point about six inches above the roofing.
- 4). Fit the vent flange over the vent pipe. Gently pry loose the shingles around the hole and slide the flanges of the vent flange under the shingles. Fasten the shingles back in place using roofing tar.
- 5). Fasten the seal at the top of the flange to the pipe completing the seal around the pipe.
