Industrial Laptops-Can Laptops Really Be Dropped?

If you work in a rough environment that may involve drops or physical impacts you are wise to consider a more rugged laptop. As the working environment has become more centered around computers it's imperative that these computers stay working. Dropping a laptop can be a very quick end to an otherwise productive day. Being that most mainstream laptops cannot handle drops or other environmental factors of any kind more and more manufacturers have been investing in development of rugged outdoor laptops. The good news is huge strides have been made in laptop resilience.

Many want to know the main question regarding drops or physical impacts. Do they make laptops that really can be dropped? The answer is an emphatic yes and engineers have really made huge leaps in the impacts they can withstand. Currently the most standard rugged laptops can withstand your traditional 3 foot drop. More premium models can withstand drops up to 6 feet without damage to the inner components.

Drops are obviously one of the main concerns for people working outdoors. Many want to know how it is possible that they can rate these computers up to a six foot drop. The main way that these rugged computers are able to withstand such a violent impact is due to the special housing that the computer is built within. This housing is far different than your average laptop or notebook. Often special alloys are used or Ballistic Armor protection. These type of cases are incredible in terms of what they can withstand. They have extra heavy duty hinges that are sealed for dust and moisture protection but are also much more robust in their ability to withstand drops. Often this is where other laptops tend to break. Also rubberized edges play a very important role in dispersing the impact from a drop or blow.

The toughest laptops out there for drops are the units with the MIL-STD-810G certification or military certification. While this rating may not mean much to you, the most important thing to realize is this certification is what qualifies laptops to not only withstand drops up to 72 inches or six feet but also includes a broad spectrum of other hazard certifications. These would also include electromagnetic compatibility, shocks, vibrations, humidity differences, sand and dust resistance, temperature extremes, thermal shocks , as well as rain and altitude challenges. This is the rating that premium ruggedized laptops contain that sets them apart from other laptops.
