- 1). Choose any type of clean glass bottle with a narrow neck. The smaller the opening, the better; this will decrease evaporation and force the oil up through the reeds. You will want it to be approximately half the length of the skewers or less. You can choose clear, colored or opaque glass; it does not affect the fragrance.
- 2). Pour about 1/4 cup of carrier oil into the glass bottle. Mineral, safflower or sweet almond oil are good choices.
- 3). Add about 12 drops of your favorite essential oil. You can get creative and mix two or three essential oils, such as orange and vanilla, or use only one flavor. You may wish to add a few more drops of the essential oil in a couple of days if the scent is not strong enough.
- 4). Add a splash of vodka to the oil mixture; this will help it to travel up the skewers better, according to the Tip Nut website. Alternately, you can add a spritz or a couple of drops of your favorite perfume if you do not have any vodka; just make sure the scents will complement each other.
- 5). Place the reeds in the oil mixture, and leave them for about an hour. Remove them, turn them upside down, and stick the other end into the oil. This will help the fragrance release faster.
- 6). Turn the reeds over approximately once a week to refresh the scent, and refill it when it gets low.
