- 1). Remove all solid matter from the pipe, including pieces of unburned tobacco and dottle---residue of partially burned tobacco from a previous use.
- 2). Place the pipe in a semi-upright position. This step ensures that the salt and the alcohol will not spill out of the pipe and make a mess.
- 3). Fill the bowl of the pipe with non-iodized salt. Ideally, the salt level should be even with the rim of the bowl.
- 4). Add the alcohol to the salt. Because such a small amount of alcohol---8 to 20 drops---is needed, an eyedropper makes the process easier. You may also slowly pour the alcohol, but have some paper towels ready to clean up any drips.
- 5). Wait for the alcohol to evaporate. This process typically takes between 8 and 24 hours.
- 6). Remove the salt from the bowl. Use a pipe tool to loosen the crusty salt cake, which is now brown or black in color. To ensure that all the salt is removed, use a pipe cleaner and blow air through the pipe.
