- 1). Drive several nails and screws sideways into the surface of a new piece of wood. Remove the nails and screws and hit the wood with both the head and claw of a hammer.
- 2). Scuff the wood with a stiff wire brush in several directions. Remove the roughest imperfection left by the wire brush with coarse sandpaper.
- 3). Paint the entire surface of the wood with light grey penetrating stain or India ink diluted with water. Allow the stain or ink to dry.
- 4). Sand parts, but not all, of the wood with extra fine sandpaper. Paint the wood with black coffee or tea and allow that to dry.
- 5). Thin some paint (most old barns were red) using about two parts paint thinner and one part paint. Rub most of the board with a candle.
- 6). Paint the board roughly with the thin paint and allow that to dry. Sand the board with medium sandpaper to remove the wax and the paint that covered it.
- 7). Dissolve dirt or charcoal in water. Paint the board with that and allow it to dry.
