Instructions for a Votive Candle

    Equipment and Supplies

    • Make sure you have all the needed materials before you begin your project. You can find the equipment and supplies you need to make a votive candle at most craft supply stores. If you choose to heat the wax on a stovetop, you will need a double boiler. Otherwise you can use a container specifically made for melting wax. Either way, you will also need a thermometer with which to monitor the temperature of your wax.

Buy the appropriate mold for your votive candle, making sure that it is the correct size. There are several different types of candle wax you can use. Using a wax formulated for making votives will ensure the best results. You also will need wicks that are pretabbed, candle dye and fragrance, if desired. It is important to buy a fragrance made for candles, because using a soap oil or fragrance will impede the burning ability of your candle.

    Techniques

    • Begin by melting the candle wax in your container or double boiler. To avoid burning or scorching the wax, monitor its temperature to make sure it stays around 175 degrees Fahrenheit. Add the candle dye slowly to achieve your desired color. Remember that the color of the melted wax will appear much darker than when the candle is cool. When adding the fragrance, add a few drops at a time so you don't end up with a candle that has an overwhelming scent.

Spray a thin layer of cooking spray inside your votive molds before you pour the wax. This will cause the candles to release more easily from the molds. Pour the wax into the mold slowly to avoid creating air bubbles or splashing wax out of the mold. Because the wax will settle as it cools, save a little of the melted wax to use as filler. Allowing the votive to cool slightly before you insert the wicks will make them easier to place.

    Tips and Warnings

    • If your votives resist releasing from the molds, place the molds in the refrigerator or freezer for five minutes before attempting to remove them. This will loosen the wax from the mold and make it easier to remove.

Never burn votive candles outside of a holder like free-standing candles. Because they will liquefy, they are intended to burn in a votive holder.
