- 1). Plan for a large countertop area designated for kids to use in meal preparation. The more space available, the less likely items will fall. Make the work area accessible to kids with an island that has a raised countertop for adults and a second, lower tier for kids. Use a durable, easy-to-clean finish on your countertop, such as quartz or granite.
- 2). Designate a low cabinet for kids only. Store plastic mixing bowls, plastic utensils, paper plates, plastic glasses and kid-friendly cookbooks in the cabinet. Stock the cabinet with easily prepared foods, such as cereal, microwave popcorn and granola bars.
- 3). Select a bright and inviting color theme for the kitchen. White and yellow, or red and white works well. Paint the walls with a semi- or high-gloss paint. Dirt and grime can easily be cleaned from this type of painted surface. Select an easy-to-clean, hard-surface flooring such as hard wood or linoleum. Stay away from wallpaper or upholstered furniture for your kitchen design.
