- 1). Remove both drawers from both file cabinets. Set them out of the way.
- 2). Put on safety goggles to protect your eyes from sparks and metal slivers.
- 3). Drill two holes in the top of one file cabinet. Use a drill bit the same diameter as your bolts. Drill both holes two inches in from the left hand edge of the cabinet, one located two inches in from the front and the other two inches in from the back.
- 4). Drill two holes in the top of the other file cabinet, using a drill bit the same diameter as your bolts. Drill both holes two inches from the right hand edge of the cabinet, one located two inches from the front and the other two inches from the back.
- 5). Sand one face of the plywood. You can sand the bottom if you like, but it's not necessary.
- 6). Drill four holes in the plywood, using the same drill bit you used on the file cabinets. Drill one hole in each corner of the plywood, set two inches from each edge of the corner.
- 7). Set up the file cabinets approximately 24 inches apart, with the drilled holes on the outermost side of each cabinet. Set the plywood, sanded side up, on top of the cabinets.
- 8). Bolt the plywood in place with the bolt heads pointing upward and a washer on either side of the lumber and file cabinet.
- 9). Replace the file drawers.
