- 1). Cut strips of fabric from your chosen fabric. Make the strips about twice as long as you want the final ruffle to be. Make the ruffles about ½ an inch thicker than you want the final ruffle to be.
- 2). Serge the edges of the fabric if it has frayed edges. If you use a knit fabric, you do not have to serge the edges.
- 3). Sew a line 1/3 inch from one long edge of the fabric. Sew another line ½ inch from the edge.
- 4). Pull the strings on either side of the fabric to gather the fabric into a ruffle. Make the ruffle as loose or as gathered as you like. Sew the edges in place once again after finishing to secure the gathered fabric. This kind of ruffle works best on hems and the front of garments.
