Plan Your Escape

Before you find yourself and your five closest friends carrying a hot tub that you do not know what to do with, make sure that an escape plan is created. Look at the surroundings to determine in there is enough room to fit the hot tub through the pathway. Also, make sure you know where gas and electric meters are located as they have a tendency to get in the way.

If you have to walk through a tight section, make sure that you are taking into consideration any air conditioning units that might make things a little difficult. To properly do this, measure the width and the height of the hot tub. If you will be moving the hot tub through grass or gravel instead of solid concrete, you might want to spread out some plywood for easier moving. While the plan is being developed, it is wise to start draining the hot tub.

Remove the Equipment Pack

Before the hot tub can be removed, the equipment pack needs to be disconnected and removed from the hot tub. This means that the pump, filter, heater, blower and all of the electrical and plumbing components must be disconnected with caution. If this part is skipped, the equipment could become damaged in the move, which can be a big expense. Allow all parts to completely drain of water and package them separately for safekeeping.

Haul It Away

While it may not look like much, hot tubs are extremely heavy; even the small ones. For an average size hot tub, you will need four strong individuals to get the hot tub out and onto its side. Once the hot tub is on its side, it can be moved onto a dolly. For large hot tubs, two dollies may be needed. Make sure that the dollies are strapped tightly to the hot tub to make the move easier and to prevent injury.

Covering the Hole

If the hot tub was set into a deck or the ground, it is important that the hole be tended to. Children, animals and even adults can fall in and injure themselves. Depending on the size of the hole, use large sheets of strong plywood or bring attention to the area with posts and yellow caution tape until you can tend to it.
