- 1). Clean the surface of the pole. Remove any dirt or debris by washing it with water and mild soap. Rinse thoroughly, and allow the pole to dry before painting. Starting with a clean surface improves the adhesion of the paint.
- 2). Select the paint colors for your swirl. Use a range of different colors for a vibrant, fanciful look, or stick to multiple hues within one color family for a more subdued and elegant look. Use acrylic paint for the most versatility and durability.
- 3). Experiment with different swirl patterns and colors on a scrap piece of paper or cardboard. This allows you to get a feel for painting the designs. Once you're comfortable with your technique, start painting it on the pole.
- 4). Use thick paintbrushes to create larger swirled lines and fine-tipped brushes for intricate, smaller swirls. Start your swirl at the center and move outward in a circular or oval pattern. Use the pole shape to your advantage and paint swirls that go around the entire circumference.
