- 1). Measure the wall to determine the overall length of the piece of crown molding.
- 2). Stretch the tape measure across the front, or finished, side of the crown molding. Use a pencil to mark the location of the desired overall length of the piece of crown molding.
- 3). Position a square over the mark, butt the square against the edge of the molding and draw a line through the mark and straight across the width of the molding.
- 4). Hold the molding finished side up and turn the molding so the bottom edge, the edge that will point toward the floor, faces up. Carpenters refer to the bottom edge of crown molding as the "foot" and the top edge as the "shoulder." Place the molding onto the table of a compound miter and press the molding's foot against the rear fence.
- 5). Lift the molding's foot and position its beveled edge flush against the rear fence. At the same time, position the beveled edge of the shoulder flush against the saw's bottom table; the flat, back side of the molding, the saw fence and saw table now form a triangular gap behind the molding.
- 6). Adjust the saw blade to cut at a 45-degree bevel; for an inside corner the blade cuts from right to left, leaving the interior of the molding visible. Position the cut mark beneath the saw blade. Activate the saw and cut across the mark.
