- 1). Nail a waterproof underlay around the base of the chimney. The water barrier layer is placed and nailed directly to the under-construction.
- 2). Measure your chimney and purchase the metal flashing using the measurements that you took. Buy twice the material because there will be a lot of flapping and folding in order to seal the chimney base.
- 3). Cut the material into 4-foot wide strips. Use metal snips to start the cut and a strong utility knife to finish it. Cut in a straight line and make the strip as long as possible. You should have four strips for each side of the chimney.
- 4). Fold the strips horizontally, so that each fold should be 2 feet wide. Place one flashing on one side of the chimney. One fold of the strip should lay on the roof and the other fold should lay against the chimney itself.
- 5). Wrap the flashing around on side the chimney. Fold the flashing strips as you go over the corners and make generous overlaps and folds. Secure the strip onto the roof with a nail gun or staple gun
- 6). Check if the bottom of the chimney is properly covered and if the flashing is securely installed. There should be no gaps.
- 7). Continue installing the metal flashing strips around the chimney. Use metal snips to cut the roofing to adjust to the shape of the chimney and go around it.
