How to Remove Awnings

    Retractable Awning

    • 1). Turn the twist lever that retracts the awning until it is in the closed position.

    • 2). Position a ladder at each end of the awning. This will allow you access the bolts that secure the top rail of the awning to the building.

    • 3). Unscrew the bolts that secure the brackets of the top railing to the building. A wrench or socket set will work. As you remove the bolts, the awning may fall forward. Hold the awning in an upright position.

    • 4). Lower the awning rail to remove it from the building if it does not have support arms that connect the top rail to the bottom of the building. If it awning does have support arms, slowly lower the top of the awning forward until it rests against the ground. Remove the bolts that secure the support brackets to the lower portion of the building. Again, a wrench or socket set will work.

    • 5). Fill the holes in the building with acrylic silicone caulk if you do not plan to install a new awning. This will prevent moisture from getting into the walls. If you plan to install a new awning and you will reuse the holes, do not fill them with caulk.

    Permanent Structure

    • 1). Pull apart the Velcro lining that holds the canvas onto the metal or wood framing, or remove any rope laced through the edges of the canvas to hold it onto the framing. It is also common for the canvas to be attached to the framing through a combination of both methods. For example, some use lace to hold the sides of the canvas taut and have Velcro to hold the canvas to horizontal joists that add rigidity to the center of the awning.

    • 2). Pull the canvas off the metal or wood framing, and fold it up. If it is wet, place it unfolded in your yard and allow it to dry before folding it. This will prevent mold.

    • 3). Dig a hole around the vertical posts that support the front of the awning. If the poles do not go into the ground, they likely attach to a concrete slab. If this is the case, use a socket and ratchet to unscrew the bolts that hold the brackets for the front vertical posts onto the concrete. In rare cases, the poles might go directly into the concrete. To remove them, ether break up the concrete around the posts with a chisel and a hammer or saw the legs off with a handsaw as close to the ground as possible.

    • 4). Unscrew the bolts that secure the horizontal joists to the building. At this time, the framing is disconnected from the ground and the home. Rotate the framing over, and place it on the ground.

    • 5). Fill the holes in the wall with a silicone caulk to prevent water from getting into the house.

    • 6). Remove the brackets that secure each piece of the framing together. If the framing is metal, the brackets usually require a socket and ratchet to remove the bolts. If the framing is wooden, the brackets may require a socket and ratchet or a screwdriver.
