- 1). Turn off the IBM Thinkpad R40 2897. Unplug the power supply. Touch the Thinkpad R40 and a grounded metal object in the room to release any potentially harmful static electricity. Turn the computer over.
- 2). Remove the battery by pressing the release catch and lifting the battery out. Remove the screw on the memory slot cover with a Phillips screwdriver. The memory slot cover is on the front right corner when the computer is upside-down and the front of the computer facing you. Remove the cover.
- 3). Remove one of the RAM modules by pressing the tabs on each side apart and lifting out the RAM. Insert a new RAM, tab side first, at an angle into the socket. Press it down flat until it locks into position. Repeat with the second RAM module.
- 4). Replace the memory slot cover. Replace the screw. Turn the computer over. Plug in the power supply.
