- 1). Spread floor adhesive along the edge of the room where you're going to start, which is generally the longest wall, using a notched trowel. Don't start along the wall that contains the entrance to the room. Apply the adhesive over the whole length of the edge and coming out about 2 feet from the wall.
- 2). Set the first floorboard next to the wall, at one end, positioned with the groove edge toward the wall. Put spacing shims between the board and the wall to create a gap that will allow the flooring to expand over time.
- 3). Lay the rest of the boards of the first row alongside the wall, connecting them end to end and putting shims along the wall for the whole length. Cut the last board in the course on your miter saw to fit against the side wall.
- 4). Set the second course in place alongside the first, linking the floorboards along their sides. Position the boards so the ends are staggered between the courses.
- 5). Work your way across the floor course by course, spreading more adhesive as needed. Continue until you are approaching the far wall and running out of space to work. Leave the final section of flooring undone so you can exit the room without stepping on the newly laid floor. Let the adhesive set for 12 hours.
- 6). Lay the final few courses of boards once you can stand on the first section. Use a table saw to cut along the lengths of the boards in the final course, leaving a ½-inch space along the ending wall. The space will be hidden by floor trim later.
