- 1). Wet the ground where you plan to install the adobe floor with a garden hose. This will make leveling the dirt easier. Use a metal rake and a shovel to remove high spots. Use the dirt from the high spots to fill in low spots. Use a level to ensure the ground is flat after you finish.
- 2). Mix topsoil and ash in a 2-to-1 ratio into a large container and then add enough water to make a thick paste. Make sure you use strained soil and ash to eliminate rocks, sticks and other debris.
- 3). Spread the soil mix over the ground to create a flat 1/2-inch thick surface. Use a trowel or a cement squeegee to keep the soil mix level. Allow 48-hours drying time before moving on to the next step.
- 4). Reverse the mixing ratio of the soil and ash but add boiled linseed oil to replace the water. Again, you need a thick consistency.
- 5). Mix one part sand for every four parts of linseed mixed soil and blend it together. Add additional boiled linseed oil to maintain a thick consistency. You can also add a small amount of straw to the mix to help maintain an authentic look.
- 6). Spread the soil mix over the ground to create a flat, 1/2-inch thick surface. Use a trowel or a cement squeegee to keep the soil mix level.
- 7). Place indentations in the soil with the trowel to create designs such as square tiles, or even use a knife to draw patterns into the dirt. This portion of the task is only limited by your creativity. Allow 48-hours drying time.
