- 1). Determine the type of window well you have. Round window wells look like half circles in front of the window. Straight wells' sides bend in from the window's sides at approximately a 45-degree angle and come together to form a straight front edge. Square wells' sides come straight away from the window, bend at a 90-degree angle and form a straight front edge.
- 2). Measure the width of the window well's opening on the end nearest to the house's wall. Extend the tape measure from edge to edge across the opening. Write the measurement down.
- 3). Measure from the house's wall to the window well's front edge. Take this measurement in the window well's central point. Write this measurement down.
- 4). Measure the distance from your window's top edge to the ground, if your window is above the window well's top edge. If the window is completely below the window well, skip this step.
- 5). Measure the length of the window well's straight portion, along the front edge. Skip this measurement if you have a round window well.
- 6). Measure from the window well's top edge to the ground. Skip this step if your window well's top edge rests at ground level or below ground level.
