- 1). Power off your computer and unplug it from the wall outlet.
- 2). Remove the access panel from the computer case. (Refer to the user's manual that came with your computer if you need help doing this.)
- 3). Locate the CMOS battery, which is connected to the motherboard; it is very small and round. Note how the battery is positioned on the motherboard so you can replace it with no problems.
- 4). Remove the battery very carefully and keep it separate from the motherboard for approximately 25 minutes. Use your fingers to pull the battery up and out. This resets the computer to its factory settings. If this works, skip to Step 6; if the battery is soldered onto your motherboard, proceed to Step 5.
- 5). Locate the jumper on the motherboard; it is usually labeled "CLEAR," "CLEAR CMOS," "CLR," "CLRPWD," "PASSWD," "PASSWORD," "PSWD" or "PWD." Remove the jumper from the two pins on which it rests and place it on the pins that are not covered; for example, if the jumper is on pins one and two, move it to two and three.
- 6). Put the battery or jumper back onto the motherboard in the position in which it was found. Return the access panel to the case.
