- GnuZip, Bzip2 and the Linux/Unix command Tar creates a .TGZ file. The file format .TGZ, within Unix, can contain multiple files within the compressed file. The file format within Linux commonly contains installation packages for various versions of the operating system. You can also share .TGZ files with others via the Internet, emails or through computer networks.
- Use a commercial program like BitZipper, a shareware program like RSP Tar Gzip OCX 2.1.0 or a freeware program like Universial Extractor v1.6.1 or PeaZip to open a .TGZ file. The programs are for Windows and Linux platforms and include user-friendly interfaces. Some of the programs let you open .TGZ file by double clicking on the file’s name.
- You can use Gunzip, a free file decompression program for Linux and Unix systems, or 7-zip or Pkgtool, two freeware programs, open .TGZ files. You can also use the tar command, via the command line -- tar -xzf XXXXXXX.tgz, with "XXXXXXX" representing the name of your .TGZ file, to open a .TGZ file within Linux or Unix.
- Like Windows, you can open and extract the content of a .TGZ file on your Mac system using a variety of programs that also open Zip and other compressed file formats. Programs include Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe 2011, a commercial program; Archiver; a commercial program; and Zipeg, a free program. Once the .TGZ file is open, you can save the file’s inner file on your Mac for printing or sharing. You can also delete the .TGZ file after opening it, if desired.
