What is Active Sync for X50?

    Features

    • Microsoft ActiveSync allows you to synchronize your email, calendar, tasks and files with the Dell Axim X50 and other PDAs running the Windows Mobile operating system. When ActiveSync detects the Axim X50 in its cradle, Windows also mounts it like a removable storage device, allowing you to copy files to it through Windows Explorer.

    Final Version

    • If your computer runs Windows XP or earlier, you should install ActiveSync to synchronize your Axim X50 with your computer. However, you should not install the version included with your device. Dell released the Axim X50 in 2004, but Microsoft has since updated the utility. Microsoft released the final version of ActiveSync -- version 4.5 -- in 2007. Download it from Microsoft.com.

    Windows Mobile Device Center

    • Microsoft replaced ActiveSync with the Windows Mobile Device Center, a new utility, with the release of Windows Vista in 2006, making it a component of the Windows operating system. If your computer runs Windows Vista or Windows 7, connect the Axim X50 to your computer using the supplied USB cable. Windows automatically detects the device and walks you though setting up the Windows Mobile Device Center.

    Manual Installation

    • If you experience a problem synchronizing your Axim X50 automatically in Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can also download and install the Windows Mobile Device Center manually. Run the Windows Update utility from the Start menu and follow the prompts to update your computer after connecting the Axim X50 to the cradle. Alternatively, navigate to the download page for the Windows Mobile Device Center at Microsoft.com and click "32-bit WMDC" or "64-bit WMDC," depending on the version of Windows installed. Double-click the file after downloading it to your computer, and follow the prompts to complete the installation process.
