How to Change the Default Reader in MS Windows

    Change a Default Program in Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows 7

    • 1). Right-click the icon of a file for which you want to change a program association. Select "Open With" from the resulting menu and then select the "Choose Default Program" option.

    • 2). Click the name of the program you want to use if it appears in the "Recommended Programs" or "Other Programs" lists. To find a program not included in these lists, click the "Browse" button and navigate to the folder containing your desired program. Once you find the program, click its icon and then click "Open."

    • 3). Check the box near the bottom of the screen labeled "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" after selecting your program. Click "OK." The reader or program associated with the selected file type has been successfully changed.

    Change a Default Program in Microsoft Windows XP and Earlier Windows Versions

    • 1). Click the Windows Start button and select "Control Panel." Depending on your system configuration, this option may be located within the "Settings" sub-menu.

    • 2). Click "Tools" in the top menu bar and then select "Folder Options." Click the "File Types" tab in the resulting dialog box.

    • 3). Scroll down the list of file types and locate the type that you want to open with a different program. Click its name once and then click the "Change" button near the bottom of the dialog box.

    • 4). Click the name of the program you want to use if it appears in the "Recommended Programs" or "Other Programs" lists. Find a program not included in these lists by clicking the "Browse" button and navigating to the folder containing your desired program. Once you find the program, click its icon and then click "Open."

    • 5). Check the box near the bottom of the screen labeled "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" after selecting your program. Click "OK." The reader or program associated with the selected file type has been successfully changed.
