- 1). Download and install a file-compression program from a freeware site such as cnet.com. Popular free file-compression programs include WinZip, WinRAR and ZipGenius (see Resources section).
- 2). Open your file-compression application to access the main menu.
- 3). Choose "Open" from the main menu, use the browser in the pop-up window to select the file you wish to unzip and click "OK."
- 4). Click the "Extract" icon on the main menu, select a destination for the decompressed files and click the "Extract" button in the pop-up window.
