- Adding a distressed finish to wood surfaces makes the wood appear fairly old, weathered and worn down. You essentially sand down the wood, apply a layer of paint and sand again. You keep sanding the wood and applying more paint, giving the wood an uneven covering of paint that looks worn. Add a brighter layer of paint to the top of the wood, such as red or green, and then add a coating in white paint. When you sand through the white paint, you allow traces of the brighter color to peek through. Distress a wood cabinet and use for the storage of towels and bathroom accessories or distress the wood trim in the bathroom.
- Antique pieces or antique-style pieces are a necessity for your farmhouse bathroom. Pair a few silver candle holders with white candles and a stand mirror. Browse flea markets for old bottles, jars and boxes of beauty care products, including soap and shaving cream. Line the boxes along a shelf in the bathroom or above the mirror.
- Modern bathroom fixtures and plumbing pieces look out of place in a traditional farmhouse-style bathroom. Instead of updating and adding in new pieces, make use of the existing features or bring in some old style pieces. A pedestal sink or apron sink fits the style better and is still useful in the bathroom. Country Living suggests using an old piece of fabric around the base of the sink. Store cleaning supplies or personal hygiene products behind the fabric. Adding an old claw-foot bathtub works with the farmhouse theme as well.
- Bring in wicker baskets to store dirty laundry, cleaning supplies, extra toilet paper and anything else you can name. Arrange the baskets around the room to keep everything you need on hand. Floral patterns, such as window treatments and rugs, work well with the farmhouse theme. Finish off the design of the bathroom with a silver stand mirror and an elegant soap dish.
