- 1). Gather all your necessary tools and place the ladder in an area where you'll be able to climb up and down unfettered.
- 2). Roll out tar paper or roofing felt across the roof. Start in the corner farthest from the ladder and work toward the ladder. When tarring or finishing a roof, it is important to get into the habit of not painting yourself into a corner. Cut off excess paper or felt hanging over the edge with a utility knife.
- 3). Secure the tar paper or felt to the roof's surface with roofing nails and a hammer. Spread tar from a bucket over the paper or felt with a mop. Spread the tar beginning at the corner farthest away from the ladder and work toward the ladder. Apply a thick, even layer of tar.
- 4). Repeat steps 2 and 3 as necessary. Apply the last layer of tar in small sections, then spread a thick layer of gravel onto the freshly applied tar. Continue this pattern, working toward the ladder as you mop on small sections of tar and spread gravel over each section.
