- 1). Make a template for the piece of fabric you plan to cut. Measure its dimensions and mark them on a piece of paper.
- 2). Cut the template out of the paper with scissors.
- 3). Lay the fabric flat in front of you on a surface you can cut against.
- 4). Pin the template to the fabric with straight pins. Orient the pattern so that the corners follow the grain or weave of the fabric as much as possible. Cutting fabric, like cutting meat, is easier if you cut with the grain.
- 5). Make sure that you have the pattern secured to the fabric enough that the template will not move as you circumnavigate its edges. By following a steadfast guideline, you can make a firm cut.
- 6). Hold the rotary cutter with your dominant hand. Press the template to the fabric with your other hand.
- 7). Line the rotary cutter against the template. Do not push it so close that it causes the template to bunch. Press the rotary tool firmly into the fabric. Push it beside the edge of the template.
- 8). Make the cut around a rounded corner in one motion so that the cut appears even. Cut a sharply angled corner in one or two motions, whichever is more comfortable for you.
- 9). Follow the edge of the template with the rotary cutter until you have cut out the entire piece of fabric.
