- 1). Measure out the space you would like to cover with a decal in inches. Inches is one of the most common measurements used by photo-editing software, and most decal papers are sold with their size listed in inches.
- 2). Purchase decal paper that is close to the size of the area you would like to cover. Decal paper can be purchased at many paper supply stores or from an online retailer (see Resources). Usually, it's better to go slightly larger than the intended area, because edges of the decal can always be trimmed to fit on the surface correctly.
- 3). Open a photo-editing software of your choice. Paint software is usually not preferred, because of it's limited capabilities.
- 4). Create an image with the dimensions, in inches, of your desired decal size.
- 5). Design your decal using the tools available in your picture-editing software. Brushes and circles can be great for emphasizing borders, and, as long as you own the copyright, you can insert an image onto the image.
- 6). Print the decal on decal paper in a laser printer. Put the side that is to be printed face-down in the tray of the printer.
- 7). Trim any unused edges of the decal paper.
- 8). Apply the decal to the surface by removing the back and slowly pressing down on the paper.
