How to Run XP Professional in VMware

    • 1). Download and install VMware Player using the first Resource link. Launch the utility after installing it. If you already have VMware Player installed, skip this step.

    • 2). Insert your Windows XP installation CD. If you are using a copy of the installation CD in the ISO file format, skip this step.

    • 3). Click "Create a New Virtual Machine." A new window opens.

    • 4). Select the source that you will be using to install Windows XP. To install from the original CD, select the "Installer Disc" radio button. To install from an ISO file, select "Installer disc image file," then click "Browse," navigate to the location of the Windows XP ISO file and double-click it. The bottom of the window should now display the message "Windows XP Professional Detected." VMware Player's Easy Install feature allows most of the installation process for Windows XP to be automated. Click "Next."

    • 5). Type your 25-character product key for Windows XP in the space at the top of the window.

    • 6). Type the name under "Personalize Windows" that you want to use when logging in to the Windows XP virtual machine. If desired, you may also enter a password. Click "Next."

    • 7). Type the name that you want to use to identify the virtual machine on your computer. VMware Player selects the name "Windows XP Professional" by default.

    • 8). Click the "Browse" button and navigate to the folder where you would like VMware Player to store the data for the Windows XP Virtual Machine. VMware Player creates a folder under your Documents folder by default. Click "Next."

    • 9). Enter the maximum amount of disk space that the virtual machine should consume on your hard drive. VMware uses a dynamic virtual disk by default, meaning that the virtual machine will consume space on your hard drive only as needed.

    • 10

Select a radio button to indicate whether VMware Player should store the contents of the virtual disk as one file or multiple 2 GB files. The FAT32 file system cannot handle files larger than 2 GB, so if you think that you might one day need to transfer the virtual machine to another computer using a FAT32 device such as most USB flash drives, consider the second option. Click "Next."

    • 11

Click the "Finish" button after viewing the final confirmation screen displaying the configuration that you have selected for the virtual machine. The virtual machine starts, and VMware Player installs Windows XP automatically.
