- 1). Insert the restore CD that came with your Presario 8000 computer. If you do not have the restore CD, you can contact Compaq to order a replacement. The restore CD allows you to restore your Presario 8000 back to its factory default settings.
- 2). Shut down the Presario 8000 and wait for it to power off. Press the "Power" button and watch the screen carefully. Press a key when you see the "Press any key to boot from CD" message. This will force the Presario 8000 to boot from the restore CD.
- 3). Choose the operating system that came with your Presario. The Presario 8000 shipped with a variety of operating systems, so be sure to choose the one that matches your system.
- 4). Verify that you want to format the hard drive. The restore CD will warn you three times before formatting the drive, since the format process will destroy all the data on your computer.
- 5). Insert the operating system CD when prompted. The restore process will continue by reinstalling the operating system as it existed when the Presario 8000 was shipped from the factory.
- 6). Watch for the computer to reboot one final time when the restore process is complete. The Presario 8000 is now set back to its original factory condition.
- 7). Log on to the Internet and go to the WindowsUpdate.com website. Download and install all the service packs and updates for your operating system. It can take quite some time to download the large number of updates you will need, so choose a time when you will not be using your computer.
- 8). Run a full virus scan on your restored Presario 8000 computer. This will ensure that no viruses or malware survived the low level formatting of your drive.
