- 1). Put on all protective gear.
- 2). Remove all interior and exterior trim, using a crowbar and hammer. If your trim is held in place with screws, use a cordless drill and screw bit to remove the trim screws first, then pry the trim off the wall. If you want to use the old trim as a template for the new, then try not to break it upon removal.
- 3). Punch out the hinge pins of each french door, using a hole punch and hammer. Remove the doors from the hinges. Now you have a lot less weight and no glass to deal with upon removal.
- 4). Remove any screws or nails that are holding the french door frame to the stud wall. Use the cordless drill and screw bit or crowbar and hammer. Have a helper hold the door while you remove the screws or nails.
- 5). Cut out any insulation material with your utility knife if need be to help the door frame come loose.
- 6). Pull out the french door frame with your helper.
- 7). Measure the rough opening height and width, using a measuring tape, to ensure the new slider door will fit into the same opening before you purchase or order it.
- 8). Set a few wood shims on the bottom of the rough opening hole.
- 9). Remove the slider portion from the new slider by lifting up and then out toward you. Have a helper hold the door frame while you do this.
- 10
Set the slider frame flat on the ground and apply a solid bead of construction adhesive to the backside of the door frame. Use a silicone gun and tube of construction adhesive to do this. - 11
Place the door in the rough opening hole with your helper. Attach 2 stainless steel screws through the door frame into the wall studs. Do this on both sides, just as a temporary way of holding the door up. Level the door as you add more shims and place a stainless steel screw about every 18 inches or so, all the way around the frame. Use the cordless drill and screw bit for attachment. - 12
Open and close the door to make sure it operates smoothly. - 13
Push backer rod insulation into the gaps between the door frame and wall studs. Spray in non-expanding foam to cover smaller spaces. - 14
Take all measurements for the door trim. - 15
Set up the chop saw on the long table and plug the saw in. - 16
Cut down the molding to size. Nail the molding around the door frame with the hammer and 8-penny nails. - 17
Apply silicone around the door trim and let dry for several hours.
