- 1). Cover the high-traffic areas of the floor with rugs and carpets as much as possible to minimize the exposure of your floor to scuffing and scratches from people's footwear. Rugs also will protect the floor from spills, dust and dirt that can damage your floor. Pay special attention to the path to and area around the sofas in your living room. If you have wood flooring in the kitchen and bathrooms, put rubber mats under the sinks and outside the bathtub to prevent water damage.
- 2). Keep direct sunlight from falling on your wood floors, because this will cause the natural color to fade. Use curtains, blinds, drapes or shades to protect your floors from the sun's harsh rays.
- 3). If you have pets, keep their nails clipped short to avoid scratches and gouges on your wood floors. Keep children's toys with sharp wheels or sharp edges away from your wood floors.
- 4). Always refinish scratches and stubborn stains as quickly as possible, sanding first and then refinishing. Don't attempt to use an electric sander unless you know what you are doing!
Sweep the floor daily and mop as necessary with a well-wrung-out mop; don't get too much water on your floors. Don't neglect spills; make it a practice to clean up immediately.. - 5). Never drag furniture or other heavy items across the floor. Also, put rubber feet or other protection on the bottom of the legs of furniture to protect your floors.
- 6). Wood floors need vacuuming and periodic cleaning with a wood floor cleaner. You also can get excellent results from waxing or polishing the floors.
