- 1). Cut the hood off the sweatshirt and fold in half so you have the side view of the hood. Lay the hood on the paper and trace around it to create a pattern. Be sure to add a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Set aside the sweatshirt to use later for the inner ears.
- 2). Make the pattern for the outer and inner ears. Draw one tall rabbit ear shape for the outer ear. Draw a second rabbit ear shape the same height as the outer ear but about half as wide.
- 3). Lay the faux fur with the fur side down on your cutting mat. Be sure the nap of the fur is pointing down. Pin the hood and outer ear patterns to the fur. You need to draw two hood pieces and two outer ear pieces. Trace around each pattern piece and cut out. Make sure you flip over the hood pattern when drawing the second hood shapes so the pieces will be opposite one another.
- 4). Cut out the toony furry hood and the outer ear pieces using the craft knife on the cutting mat.
- 5). Pin the inner ear pattern to the sleeve of the sweatshirt and cut out two inner ears.
- 6). Pin the two hood pieces together, right sides together, on the arc of the hood. Sew together on the 5/8 sewing line.
- 7). Insert the sweatshirt layer into the outer hood layer, right sides together. Pin along the front of the hood. Sew together using the pressure foot as a guide.
- 8). Pin the hood together along the bottom edge. Be sure to leave a gap in the middle for turning right side out. Cut off any excess fabric
- 9). Turn the hood right-side out through the gap. Turn under the edges of the gap and pin closed, then top stitch across the bottom edge of the hood.
- 10
Pin a length of ribbon to the inside front edge of the hood. Be sure to leave enough ribbon hanging off either side of the hood for tying. Sew the ribbon to the hood. - 11
Pull out any fur that got sewn into your seam lines by combing the fur. - 12
Lay one inner ear piece on top of an outer ear piece, right sides together. Arrange the top piece so it is aligned with one side of the ear and pin down. Sew down that side using the pressure foot as a guide. - 13
Pull the unsewn side of the inner ear fabric over to the edge of the outer ear fabric and pin together. Sew down that side using the pressure foot as a guide. Repeat for the other ear. Cut off any excess fabric from both ears and turn right-side out through the bottom edge opening. - 14
Bend a coat hanger so it is the right shape to fit into a bunny ear. Cut it to the right length. Depending on the size of your rabbit ears, you may need to use two hangers. Fold in the ends of the wire and wrap with duct tape to secure. Repeat for the other ear. - 15
Put on your hood to help you determine where to place your bunny ears. Mark the placement on one side of the top of the hood with a pin and remove the hood. Mark the same placement on the other side so the ears will be aligned. - 16
Cut a slit as wide as the bottom edge of the ear where you've marked. Be sure to only cut through the fur layer, not the sweatshirt layer. - 17
Place the bottom of the ear into the slit and pin it in place. Use a needle and thread to sew the ear to the hat, sewing through the fur and sweatshirt layers. Be sure to sew along the opening and up the edge of the ear about 1 inch to secure the ear to the hood. Repeat for the other ear. - 18
Shape the ears how you'd like and have fun with your new toony furry hood.
