- 1). Clean the surface of the old concrete. Concrete that is spalled will have chunks broken loose due to improper curing or exposure to freezing and thawing. If it is spalled or flakey, use a shovel to scrape off the loose bits and remove them. Finish by sweeping the area using a stiff broom.
- 2). Dig a trench around the old concrete pad. This space is needed to set up your framing. The trench should be 6 inches wide and at least 2 inches deep.
- 3). Frame the area to be poured with two-by-four lumber. If you are pouring 2 inches of concrete over the old pad, the framing should rise 2 inches above the old concrete. Firm the lumber up to the pad by driving stakes every 3 feet and at the corners. Coat the inner exposed framing with vegetable oil so that it is easier to release once the new concrete has set.
- 4). Apply a layer of bonding adhesive to the old concrete. A variety of products are available at your local hardware store. Different products may vary in usage instructions, so read the label before beginning application.
- 5). Mix the cement. ConcreteNetwork.com recommends using a sand-mix concrete. Follow the instructions listed on the sand-mix bag for quantity of water to be used.
- 6). Pour the concrete in the form and pack it down. This can be done with a board or a shovel. Be sure the concrete is evenly spread and snug against the form.
- 7). Level out the concrete with a troll or wood float.
