- 1). Remove the HDD from the old laptop, detaching it from its sled if it has one, and removing any connector adapters. The HDD can be located on the bottom of the laptop, but is always near the edge; typically on either side near the front. Look for a panel marked with what looks like three plates stacked, this is the normal symbol for the HDD. If you are not sure, check with the laptop user's manual for more information on the location of the HDD. Removal is generally a matter of removing one or two screws to pull out the sled assembly, and then four more screws to remove the HDD from the sled.
- 2). Remove the HDD from the new laptop, also taking it from its sled, and removing the connector adapter if there is one.
- 3). Install the HDD from the old laptop into the new laptop, using the new laptop's drive sled and connector converter, if applicable.
- 4). Boot up the new laptop, placing the Windows install CD in the CD-ROM drive, allowing the PC to boot from the CD. You should, after the initial loading of the OS files, be greeted with a screen giving you the options to Install Windows, Repair Windows, or Quit.
- 5). Select the Install option. Setup will run another quick check, and then present you with the option to repair the existing installation of Windows, or continue with installation. Press "R" to choose the repair option. Windows XP setup will proceed to remove all existing device drivers and related registry entries, and install the base Microsoft driver components. It will then go back through with device detection and other setup options, much as if it were a fresh Windows install. You will need your existing Windows XP CD key handy for this as well. Once this is completed, you will have successfully migrated your XP drive to another laptop.
