- 1). Choose a small flower loom to make a child's scarf. Use any size flower loom for an adult's scarf. Looms with two sets of pegs will make more intricate designs than looms with only one set of pegs.
- 2). Buy the appropriate yarn for your scarf. Use a wool, silk or acetate yarn for intricate evening designs. Choose a washable cotton or polyester yarn for everyday wear and for a child's scarf.
- 3). Secure the yarn in the notch near peg 7 on the outer set of pegs. Leave a 36-inch tail for later use. Wrap around the outer set of pegs first.
- 4). Wrap the yarn around peg 1 and then across to peg 7. Always wrap the yarn in the same direction (left to right or right to left) around each peg.
- 5). Wrap the yarn around peg 2 and then across to peg 8; then around peg 3 and across to peg 9.
- 6). Continue wrapping across to the next peg until the figure eight pattern is complete. You have completed one layer of the flower.
- 7). Wrap the yarn in the figure eight pattern on the outer set of pegs two additional times. Three layers will give substance to the flower petal.
- 8). Secure the end in the same notch on the flower loom and leave an 8-inch tail.
- 9). Make the inner part of the flower by wrapping around the inner set of pegs in the same manner. The inside of the flower should have one less layer than the outside.
- 10
Back stitch the flower petal together using a needle with an eye that is large enough to easily thread without fraying the yarn. A tapestry needle will work well with thicker yarn. Thread the needle with the 36-inch beginning tail. - 11
Loop completely around the yarn on each inner peg. Pull the needle up in the space between pegs 12 and 1, go over the yarn in peg 1 and down in the space between pegs 1 and 2. Pull the needle back up through the space between pegs 12 and 1 to complete the loop around the yarn. Then come up between pegs 1 and 2 and back stitch peg 2 in the same manner. Continue around the flower loom until all petals have been back stitched. The flower should have a center and well-defined petals when you have completed one time around the inner pegs. - 12
Back stitch the second round by going forward three pegs, over the yarn, and then backtrack two pegs and come up through that space. Since your first time around brought you back to peg 1, count three pegs forward (go to peg 4), wrap over, backtrack two pegs to come up at peg 2. Count forward three pegs to peg 5, wrap over and then backtrack two pegs to come up at peg 3. Continue in this manner until the second round of back stitching is complete. - 13
Knot each of the ends on the underside of the loom. Trim any excess yarn.
Remove the flower from the loom. - 14
Make the necessary number of flowers for the size scarf that you desire. - 15
Crochet a border around the outer flower petals. - 16
Connect the borders together either by hand stitching or crocheting to complete the scarf.
