- 1). Remove the stationary side of the sliding door by removing the brackets on the top and the bottom of the door with a screwdriver or drill. These brackets are located on the side of the door in the middle of the frame.
- 2). Slide the stationary side to the center of the doorway opening, lift the bottom up and swing out of the tracks. Rotate the bottom forward and the top half will lower out of its runners. The size and weight of these doors require two people to move them in order to prevent injury.
- 3). Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry off the retaining strip off the top of the sliding door and the interior casing of the door, which holds the sliding door panel in place.
- 4). Tip the top of the sliding door forward and remove the bottom from the tracks and dispose of it.
- 5). Pull nails from the exterior trim of the door and remove the trim.
- 6). Remove the threshold of the sliding door frame. Depending on how the door was originally installed this may require a crowbar or a drill to remove screws. Examine the threshold to determine how it is secured and select the appropriate tool to remove it.
- 7). Pull the old sliding door frame out of place and dispose of. The opening can now be prepped for the installation of a new door.
