- 1). Determine the size of the float for the parade. Take measurements of the base. Options for the base portion of the float can include wheeled trailers or hay trailers. Cover the base with paper. Use sturdy paper-based products such as cardboard, construction paper or poster board.
- 2). Give every small business located within the parish a shoe box and have each location decorate a miniature float representing the business. Provide ideas for businesses and organizations not familiar with creating shoe box floats. Explain the task by telling each business the shoe box is to be decorated to form a miniature float that will be compiled with all others in the parish to decorate the main parish float. For example, have the local bakery of the parish decorate the shoe box with cupcakes and cookies and the name of the business.
- 3). Provide shoe boxes to all schools located within the parish, making sure each class within each school has one shoe box to decorate. Have students decorate the shoe boxes to create shoe box floats. Have children and students decorate floats with items and themes representative of the parish. For example, use the schools colors or mascot as a starting point for decorating floats.
- 4). Gather all completed shoe box floats and arrange the miniature floats along the base of the main float. Secure each shoe box float using a multipurpose glue or adhesive. Stack additional layers of shoe box floats on top of one another, making sure each has been glued into place.
- 5). Hang a banner from each side of the final float stating the name of the parish being represented.
