- 1). Insert the blank CD disc into the drive on your computer that hosts the Windows XP operating system. Click the XP "Start" button, then click "Run" in the menu options. Type "cmd" in the text box and press "Enter." The Windows command prompt opens.
- 2). Type "cd i386" in the command prompt. Press "Enter." This points the command prompt to the "i386" directory that hosts your boot files.
- 3). Type "xcopy Ntldr x:" where "x" is the drive letter for your CD burner. Press "Enter." Type "xcopy ntdetect.com x" and press "Enter." Again, "x" is the drive letter for your burner. These two commands copy the first two boot files to the disc.
- 4). Click the XP "Start" button and select "Run." Type "notepad.exe" in the text box and press "Enter." The Windows Notepad software opens.
- 5). Copy and paste the following text into the Notepad window:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows="Windows XP Operating System" - 6). Press "Ctrl" and "S" in Notepad. In the opened window, type "boot.ini" in the "File Name" text box. Select the CD burner drive letter to save it to your boot CD. Click "Save" to complete the boot.ini file.
