Countertop Edge Options

    • Countertops play a significant role in the design of a kitchen.the kitchen. image by guiney from Fotolia.com

Remodeling a kitchen is one of the best return-on-investment building projects. Along with quality appliances, cabinets and countertops are key features for a buyer. Whether you chose granite, quartz, laminate, butcher block or pour your own concrete tops, there are a multitude of options available for the design of a counter's edges. Countertops take up a lot of visual landscape in your kitchen, so chose an edging that frames them well.

    Bullnose or Roundover

    • Ceramic tile countertops are durable, but will break dropped dishes.ceramic slab image by ElsSh from Fotolia.com

A bullnose countertop edge is a rounded convex trim that is typically made from ceramic tile. Bullnose edges work well with any design but are a great touch to a modern kitchen or bath. Bullnose countertop edges are also available in laminate or post-form countertops in which the entire countertop is formed of one seamless piece including the back splash. There are a number of variations on the bullnose edge such as the beveled bullnose, the half-stepped bullnose and the half bullnose with the flat bottom.

    Hardwood Framed

    • Many countertop treatments can be framed by pre-finished hardwood strips. This stripping is adhered to the plywood substrate of the countertop making sure that the top of the wood is level with the surface of the counter. Matching the finish of the strip to the cabinet finish is a great way to create a cohesive and tailored loop. The wood strip will require periodic refinishing due to spills, burns and scrapes.

    Ogee

    Waterfall

    • Natural stone and engineered stone surfaces are often carved with waterfall edges. This effect is attained by cutting the material into stair-stepped convex edges.

    Dupont

    • A Dupont edge starts out with a straight vertical profile that resolves with a rounded bottom edge or a ¾ radius roundover edge.
